Officiating

Although boccia is a sport where players can also be the referee, the sport still requires a dedicated team of officials to support local, regional and national tournaments. Anyone can become a referee. All you need is a keen interest in the game of boccia, the right attitude and a willingness to learn the basic rules and skills necessary to control a match.

Our officiating programme is designed to provide a staged professional development pathway so that individuals are certified to referee matches at the community level and beyond. To begin, it is recommended that you read the Introductory Officiating Guide for some background knowledge and get associated with existing officials and players in your local area who will be able to mentor you and answer any concerns you may have.

Level 1: Regional Boccia Official

The regional officiating stage is ideal for club members, parents, teachers, school students and volunteers of boccia who are interested in refereeing boccia matches at the community level - whether in a club, school or social setting. It focuses on the basic rules of competition and the role of the referee in controlling a match.

All it takes to become a certified Level 1: Regional Boccia Official is 2 easy steps (in any order):
- The successful completion of an online multiple choice theory test (to be completed in your own time).
- Experience as an official in 10 matches at the community /  school level (the most important step) by way of a verified (signed) Referee Logbook.

It concentrates on application of rules in specific situations and formal tournament protocol.

All it takes to become a certified Level 2: National Boccia Official is 2 easy steps (in any order):
